And The Award Goes To…

Class 5-205 traveled back in time to the age of the American Revolution.  There were so many inspirational leaders back then, so we decided to give one truly influential person the honor of “The American of the Year” award.

Student’s did research on an influential American.  Then they were given the task of either presenting the award and honoring them, or pretending to be the person and accepting the award.  Student’s all wrote speeches, practicing using being different people.

Some student’s got to record their speeches in GarageBand.  These student’s projects are linked below.  Please enjoy our American of the Year projects!

PS 62 Third Graders — Reader’s Theater Podcast

child-reading_39361tLast week during PS62’s annual publishing party – students from all across the school shared selected pieces from their writing portfolios. This was a very special day, and there was a buzz of excitement as parents and teachers came together to hear the voices of our students.

If you click on the player below you can listen to a snapshot of the day by stepping into Ms. McClean’s 3rd grade class, and hearing their Reader’s Theater podcast.

For those who do not know, Reader’s Theater is an engaging teaching technique that puts students into the role of the characters they are portraying. The students enjoy the opportunity to play these characters, and they also get a chance to work collaboratively on their reading fluency skills. One student in Ms. McClean’s class said, “I like Reader’s Theater because it helps me work on my reading skills, and it’s fun too.”

We hope you enjoy our podcast of the Reader’s Theater story, A Garden in the City. Please feel free to leave us a comment about our podcast. Better yet, if you attended our publishing party please  share some feedback about your experience. Thanks, and enjoy the show!

Garbage

We read a book called: Where Does All the Garbage Go? We came across two important questions. Please think about them and respond.

What happens when we run out of land for the landfills?

Where do we put all the garbage?

PS 62’s Technology Vision

At PS 62, we believe that meaningful integration of technology will enable our teachers and students to be prepared for full participation in today’s society. Technology has the power to ignite, accelerate and extend learning – enabling us to challenge every child. The engagement and relevance of technology in students’ lives make it necessary for us to embrace this new mode of learning. By “getting connected,” we can create a cohesive and informed school community that will grow together.

Take a look at what our teachers are saying about the benefits of technology integration!

Advantages of using technology

Please provide comments or feedback so our vision can be modified to meet the goals of the entire school community.

New Playground!

PS 62 is thrilled to announce that we will be building a playground in our existing schoolyard! The Trust for Public Land (TPL) is working to transform vacant school lots into vibrant playgrounds and community parks. The effort is in partnership with the City of New York as part of Mayor Bloomberg’s PlaNYC 2030. Visit their website!

The program is focusing on communities that are under served by parks. Our efforts could add trees, gardens, tracks, sports fields, courts, outdoor classrooms, chess and picnic tables, and much more to PS 62’s schoolyard.

BEFORE                                                        AFTER

Use this blog to add your ideas.  Think about the questions below and post a comment on what you would like to see.

What would you like to see in the new playground?

What natural spaces would you like to see?  For example: trees, plants, flowers, seating, etc.

What kind of Play/Fitness components would you like to include in our play equipment?

What colors would you like to include?

(STUDENTS: when posting a comment please include your first name only and your class)

What’s New At 62?

Hello Ms. Clarke!

The technology team is happy to welcome Ms. Clarke to PS 62.  Ms. Clarke brings great experience and knowledge to our team.  PS 62 now has three technology teachers!  We can’t wait to work together to integrate the school curriculum with technology.

 Goodbye Obsolete Equipment

All the outdated equipment in the building was removed for free at the end of August through a program called Clean Sweep.  The program left us lots of space for new equipment.

Speaking of New Equipment…

Councilman Joseph P. Addaboo Jr awarded PS 62 with a large sum of money to spend on informational technology.  With these funds we were able to supply each 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade classrooms with a mini labs.  Thanks so much Councilman Addabbo!!!

Other exciting news…

  • Mysuite is in its second year and we are excited to introduce the Learning Environment with a whole new group of teachers and students.
  • 4th and 5th grade classes are participating in ThinkQuest this year
  • the school has hired a CUNY Intern to come to the building a three days a week to trouble shoot software and hardware problems around the school.

ThinkQuest

ThinkQuest LogoCongratulations to Class 4-306 for creating their own websites for a city wide competition called ThinkQuest. The purpose of ThinkQuest is to get students to use the Internet as a collaborative and interactive learning tool. The students in Ms. Olino’s class worked hard researching topics of study and designing their own unique sites using Macromedia DreamWeaver. Click the links below to check out their final projects.
